Safe Schools: Understanding and Responding to Self-Injury Deliberate self-injury is a difficult issue to understand, talk about, and live with. Many people find the topic of self-injury frightening, disturbing, and even repulsive. While these feelings are understandable and normal, they can interfere with effective treatment and support. This presentation will give school professionals accurate information about self-injurious behaviors to reduce the stigma associated with it, and offer effective strategies for helping self-injuring students deal safely with painful emotions and self-injurious urges. At the end of this presentation participants will be able to: 1. Identify the factors that support and perpetuate self-injury. 2.
